Apartment Defects Cause Concern in NSW

The NSW Building Commission, established in December 2023 to address substandard development work, is grappling with a crisis in new builds as over 53% of apartments registered in the state since 2016 have exhibited serious defects, according to a government strata survey.

Despite a decline in reports of serious defects year on year since 2017, concerns persist, leading the commission to develop a heat map identifying high-risk areas in residential construction.

The commission’s proactive approach aims to address issues at the forefront rather than reactively. The industry’s problems, identified in the Building Confidence report of 2018, highlight systemic issues nationwide, with NSW taking significant steps to address them, including legislation granting the watchdog increased powers to intervene during construction.

In a contentious legal battle, two Indian restaurant chains, Moti Mahal and Daryaganj, are disputing the origins of butter chicken, a globally renowned Indian dish. Despite facing criminal liability, Donald Trump is rapidly securing his third consecutive Republican nomination, winning both the Iowa caucuses and the New Hampshire primary, becoming the first non-incumbent Republican in modern times to achieve this. Trump’s victories, driven by leveraging legal problems to portray political persecution, highlight his unique political position and ability to maintain a hold on the GOP. While former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley remains Trump’s sole GOP rival, her decision to continue the race irked the former president, who publicly criticised her and urged increased attacks from his political aides.

Play Halted as Court Surface Blisters

During the singles quarterfinals at 12 pm AEDT, the spotlight shifted to the outside courts, featuring Australian Matthew Ebden and Rohan Bopanna as the second seed.

Facing Argentinian sixth seeds Máximo González and Andrés Molteni, the match took an unexpected turn when, during the change of ends, Ebden noticed blisters and bubbles on the court surface.

Despite the relatively mild weather at around 27 degrees Celsius, the issue forced a one-hour suspension as officials addressed and rectified the court condition, allowing the match to resume on Margaret Court Arena.

Word of the Day

Capitulate – To capitulate is to surrender to an enemy, often after negotiating terms, or to stop trying to fight or resist something.

For example, “With [Horst] Hrubesch reluctant to add more attacking thrust to the team until it was too late, it was an odd game to end an odd year for Germany. But you have to give credit to Wales. Given their results, it would have been easy to capitulate in the final game, but they continued to show some fighting spirit and finally got a reward for their determined play.”
