|
The Melbourne Metro rail project encompasses the construction of a 9km tunnel connecting Melbourne’s Sunbury and Dandenong railway routes. The $12.5 billion project is set to initiate operations in 2025. It aims to address Melbourne’s overcrowded existing rail network by significantly increasing capacity and supporting over 20,000 passengers per hour. The project involves the construction of five underground stations, each with sustainability features and 6-star Green Star design certification. A total of 33 high-capacity trains will serve the network, with the potential for additional trainsets. The project utilises a public-private partnership (PPP) model and involves multiple contractors and technical advisers. A Lesson in Exceptional EngineeringA rendering of the Almonte River viaduct in Spain recently came across our desk, and it’s truly remarkable. This video showcases the bridge’s construction and highlights the incredible engineering feat behind its creation. The viaduct over the Almonte River, situated between Alcántara and Garrovillas in Cáceres, Spain, boasts a remarkable 996-meter length with a central concrete arch-type span of 384 meters, earning it a world record in high-speed railway arch bridges. Notably, it ranks among the world’s largest concrete arches for both railway and road applications. This viaduct surpasses Spain’s previous record holder, the Contreras Viaduct, and the ongoing construction of the River Tajo Viaduct, reinforcing Spain’s leadership in high-velocity and engineering endeavours. SportCricket World Cup Highlights Increasing Competition
As the Cricket World Cup begins in India, the future of one-day international (ODI) cricket faces uncertainty. The 50-over format is losing ground to the popularity of T20 franchise tournaments, leading to questions about its relevance. Despite a seemingly high number of ODI matches, they lack the significance and audience of shorter T20 games. Some propose limiting ODI cricket to World Cups, freeing up the cricket calendar and bolstering the format’s prestige. T20 cricket’s rapid rise in international growth and influence, attracting players, fans, and investors, is seen as a threat to ODI cricket’s survival. As players consider the shift, the future of ODI cricket remains in doubt.
